How Does CIS Work? - To qualify for CIS, individuals must be genuinely self-employed, and not subject to supervision, direction or control by any other party. HMRC provides every CIS subcontractor with a tax status which determines the percentage deducted from income, and you receive a CIS voucher with each payment showing the tax amount deducted. These amounts can then be offset against actual tax liability at the end of the tax year. In many cases, HMRC pays out a tax refund after submission of a Self-Assessment tax return.
